Ready to join the best course staff on campus?
Below we describe each staff role, starting with your entry point as an assistant tutor.
All CS 124 staff start as Assistant Tutors (formerly known as Course Assistants). All CS 124 and CS 125 graduates may serve in this role!
Assistant Tutors earn course credit for spending several hours each week helping students. Helping students learn computer science and programming is a learning experience itself. You will substantially deepen your own understanding by learning how to explain concepts to others.
We strongly believe that anyone who passed CS 124 can succeed and grow in this role. We’ll take care of teaching you everything you need to get started, and you’ll get plenty of practice helping students.
In addition, all staff may contribute to CS 124 by recording their own explanations of many pieces of course content. Visit our contributors page to see examples of content contributions from former and current staff.

After at least one semester as an Assistant Tutor, you may be ready to apply for a role as a Tutor (formerly known as Course Associates).
Tutors are paid course staff expected to make more substantial contributions to CS 124. Compare to Assistant Tutors, Tutors staff more hours per week. They are also expected to contribute to creating and evaluating new course content, and may begin to assume course leadership roles.
We recruit for the Tutor role exclusively from previous Assistant Tutors. However, in special cases we will consider starting exceptional candidates as Tutors. If you think that this applies to you, first sign up as an Assistant Tutor and then approach course leadership about the Tutor role.
A small number of truly exceptional staff may be invited to serve as a CS 124 Head Tutor. Head Tutors assume responsibility for some core component of CS 124—such as creating new content, managing the course forum, or developing new tools. Nobody applies for this role. We find you when you’re ready.
